MLK Day of Service: “THANK YOU!”

On behalf of all the LGBT homeless youth you helped, HRC and one•n•ten would like to thank you for participation in our MLK Day of Service in Phoenix!

We had around 130 people of all ages (our youngest volunteer was 5!) come through the Youth Center to drop off generous donations and/or to volunteer time and talent. Several hotels made welcome contributions, including the Phoenix Downtown Sheraton, Arizona BiltmoreAutos Combo C4, Hotel Palomar Phoenix and W Scottsdale, as well as St. Mary’s Food Bank. And refreshments were provided by Harley’s Italian Bistro and Rita’s Arcadia Towne Center.

Large groups of you sorted and boxed the mountains of donations received. Others worked on beautification projects for the Center – cleaning, painting, organizing and labeling throughout the Center. A community mural reflecting one of Dr. King’s beliefs was worked on by all who wished to contribute artistic skills.

We ended the day with:

  • over 60 large boxes/bins of toiletries
  • over 20 large bags of clothing
  • more than $750 in gift cards

You also impacted more than just one•n•ten, as surplus items went to Tumbleweed Center for Youth Development (whose GreenHouse Project serves LGBTQ youth) and to Phoenix Shanti (who service people living with HIV/AIDS).
