Mesa Learns the Gay Alphabet

By: Bobby Beverly Mesa

On July 26th, the Mesa group had the pleasure of having Stacey Jay come give a presentation on the “Gay Alphabet”. Stacey constructed an umbrella of terminology that provided a visual representation of the sexual/gender continuum. The night’s lesson served as an eye-opener for all of us to the increasingly sensitive terminology regarding gender and sexuality today. Even in our community we can stand to remember that there is more to our world than just boy or girl, gay or straight, gender identity and gender presentation. The message was reinforced by a game of “Gay Alphabet Pictionary”, which is basically like regular Pictionary but altogether more fabulous (or “Transtastic!” as Stacey Jay would say). What was especially cool about the night was how willing the youth were to ask questions and share their own experiences to help each other out.
