In this training, we will review basic terminology around what it means to be LGBTQ+ and best practices for LGBTQ+ inclusion. Each participant will walk away with tangible action items for how to make the spaces they occupy every day more welcoming and inclusive of all youth.

At least 30% of foster youth identify as LGBTQ+, as compared to roughly 10% of youth not in foster care. Because of this, it is incredibly important that we know how to create safe, welcoming, and affirming spaces for LGBTQ+ youth in foster care. In this training, we will review basic terminology around what it means to be LGBTQ+, as well as review best practices for creating inclusive environments for all youth. Data shows us that this risk drops drastically when transgender people are in communities that actively advocate and support them and their experiences. In this training, we will review terminology around gender identity, expression, and attribution; statistics around suicide, mental health, and the transgender community; and best practices for creating a supportive community for the transgender people in your life. Lesbian, gay, and bisexual people are twice as likely as the general population to have experienced homelessness during their lifetime, and transgender individuals are even more likely than LGB people to experience homelessness (Williams Institute, 2020). Because of this, it is incredibly important that we know how to tailor housing resources and services to address the specific needs of the LGBTQ+ community. In this training, we will review basic terminology around what it means to be LGBTQ+, as well as review best practices for serving the LGBTQ+ community, related to housing. Have you ever been witness to an instance of bullying or harassment and thought to yourself later – I should have said something? In this workshop, we are going to practice how to act as an ally by going through scenarios, and learning Right To Be’s 5 D’s – Distract, Delegate, Delay, Document, Direct – as responses to harmful situations. We’ll end by making art expressing how we would want allies to show up for us.
