Sources of Strength

1n10’s suicide prevention training program and marketing campaign is designed to teach, train, and reach Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) youth, ages 14-24 in the Sources of Strength program. Sources of Strength focuses on empowering and fostering a sense of community, healthy activities, and to provide a myriad of resources that youth can turn to when they are struggling in life. The main goal of the program is to change/shift the social norms around suicide and suicidal ideation among youth.

The overall mission of the empowerment-based Sources of Strength training program is to provide the highest quality prevention for suicide, violence, and substance abuse by training, supporting and empowering both peer leaders and caring adults to impact their friendship to maximize health and protection in the real world. By utilizing Hope, Help, and Strength messages delivered by peer leaders using local faces and voices, the program aids in increasing overall adult-youth connectedness and bonding, youth help seeking from trusted adults, referrals of distressed peers to supportive adults, and youth’s knowledge of suicide prevention and how to help emotionally distressed or suicidal peers.

The “Life In My Shoes” marketing and promotional campaign is aimed to reach youth ages 14-24 to seek help when distressed, depressed, or experiencing suicidal ideation. The main goal of the campaign is to lead youth in distress to the Q Line, a 1-800 crisis hotline that assists LGBTQ youth. Through print advertisements, web banner links, outreach cards, posters, Facebook page, and Twitter, 1n10 is leading the efforts nationally to effectively reach out to LGBTQ youth, their families, and community in order to successfully help and refer them when in crisis.
